The Major Factional Struggles in Gansu During the Cultural Revolution
As the “Cultural Revolution” progressed, the rebel mass organizations no longer targeted capitalist roaders. Manipulated by their respective higher-level backers, they became two major factions fighting each other for power in armed struggle. Especially in the second half of 1967, after Mao called for “arming the leftists” and Jiang Qing promoted “attack with the pen and defend with the sword,” the armed clashes between the two factions in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, caused heavy casualties. There were not only mutual armed struggles between the two mass factions but also confrontations between rebels and the army, and even internal struggles among high-ranking officers in the Lanzhou Military Region and the Central Military Commission. The internal struggles at the highest central level were the root cause of the large-scale armed struggles in Gansu Province and across the country. Xian Henghan, who was then a member of the Central Military Commission, political commissar of the Lanzhou Military Region, and director of the Gansu Provincial Revolutionary Committee, rose and fell dramatically during the Cultural Revolution. From his high vantage point, the memoir he wrote gives a relatively clear account of Cultural Revolution events, but it cannot be openly published. This book uses original materials to present some facts of mass armed struggle in Gansu during the Cultural Revolution, such as the stories of figures like Li Guizi and Qian Xinsha, as well as the internal struggles among Lanzhou Military Region officers, including the fates of a group of officers such as Wang Qingsheng and Zhang Zizhen, and Pan Jizu leading a rebellion. Soldier Liu Xuebao deliberately murdered an honest peasant falsely accused of being a counter-revolutionary; he, together with military region leaders and even Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily, fabricated and processed the distorted facts. As a result, Liu Xuebao became a delegate to the CCP’s “Ninth Congress” and went to Beijing to “discuss state affairs with the great leader.”
