Transport Britain December
Welcome to the second edition of our Transport Britain series. In our first issue, there was a focus on rail and its challenges, as well as how funding is invested into that important sector. Since then, the government has announced its £1.7 Transforming Cities Fund, a new strategic vision for rail has been outlined, and Crossrail has now hit the 87% completion mark. We have covered these, and other major infrastructure announcements over the last two-and-a-half months, but this issue also looks at the state of the road industry. Our interviews include speaking exclusively to to the Office of Rail and Road’s Deputy Director of Highways, to see how the organisation monitors the performance of Highways England and ensures targets are met. Invariably, road projects face problems around lack of funding, with local authorities seeing their finances squeezed, and the skills shortage that many sectors are suffering from has touched the road industry. In our chat with Howard Robinson.
